People say that the first year is always the hardest for startups, regardless what business they are in.

Well, we just passed the first cap – our first anniversary. We had so many deadlines we didn’t get to celebrate, but what means most for us is the fact that we have passed the first test.

We hope to get more interesting projects, grow and expand as our clients become bigger!

indonesiaclubbing.com in the SparxUp Awards 2010

Sunday, October 24th, 2010

We proudly announce that indonesiaclubbing is participating in the Indonesia SparxUp Awards 2010.

indonesiaclubbing logo

Having recently joined the Indonesia STARTUPLOKAL circle, we got to know and had a really nice chit chat over lunch with Ronald Ishak, owner of several big fish startups (Domikado, NSIAPay and more) and even though at first we wanted to have VV.VG go into the competition, finally we realized that indonesiaclubbing is a better example of a startup – we built it by the end of 2006 with love and passion, and what was the cocoon of ideas of a portal web for nightlife and clubbing scene in Indonesia is now officially the biggest site within its niche market.

And this time, just for you readers (they’re not that many but a lot of them return regularly – thank you for caring and reading!), I will share some little insight into indonesiaclubbing‘s world:

indonesiaclubbing has:

- Over 12,000 members and counting more everyday

- From these members above, 80% are male and 20% female

- From these members above, the largest age group of 31.8% is between 15 to 20 years old, and the second-largest age group of 24.6% is between 25 to 30 years old

- Over 1,000,000 views on the profiles of these members above

- Over 1,500 nightlife venues (clubs, bars, lounges, restaurants, cafes, billiards, rave zones) listed

- Over 2,350,000 views for these venues above

- Over 25,000 events listed for these venues above

- Over 900,000 views for these events above

- Over 19,000 photos taken from 220 events above

- Over 1,000,000 views for these event photos above

- Over 340 nightlife-and-clubbing-related articles, interviews and reviews

- Over 199,000 views for these 340 articles above

- Over 46,000 ratings given for venues & photos

So, do wish us luck for the SparxUp Awards 2010 please :)

Next year we will participate again – hopefully – with the new venture I talked about in the previous post!

[NEW STARTUP VENTURE] Online Shopping by Idebaik

Sunday, October 24th, 2010

November will be a great month for idebaik. Happy clients, new projects coming, there is no better way for us to be proud of what we have accomplished so far since we bought the company almost 8 months ago.

We are currently working on several projects, such as :

- Cheese Cake Factory (Online Shopping with intuitive admin panel to manage orders in one click)

- Riva Restaurant (part of Hotel Park Lane Jakarta – voted as South-East Asia best restaurant by Asia Tatler!)

- MOIE (Designer Furniture show-room located in Jakarta and Singapore)

- PAMA 2011 Calendar

- Coldwell Banker Intranet (fully working with Ajax)

All these projects will be 100% finished before the end of the month.

We are also finally working on our 5th in-house project since one week (After indonesiaclubbing.com, icmini.com, indoclubbing.tv and vv.vg), which will be a new concept of Clothing Online Store. This project is quite exciting since more than just being an online shopping with everything you could find in a common site of this type – and even more ! – it allows us to think about every aspect of an online project. Managing stocks, marketing, promotion, and more.

As a startup business, we still have to go through that long and windy road to climb up to reach for success, but we are happy, excited and motivated with this new business venture.

We have created and managed several online shopping so far already, but never as the owner – just as developer.  This sure will be a helluva experience and we know it’s not gonna be easy; a new friend within the Indonesia startup circle gave us a really nice quote, something to think of and something to plan far in advance to be prepared and to prevent this from happening:

“80% of startups will fail within their first year, and 80% from the rest surviving 20% will fail within the first 5 years.”
–> A statistic taken from Michael Gerber’s book “The E Myth – Why Small Business Fails and What To Do About It”.

But one that never tries will never know the sweet taste of success. But goes without saying, we don’t do it just like that – we jump with both feet in and do all the math behind first to make sure that this new thing won’t go bust. It’s a robust business plan that we need – and we’re gathering the backbones right now to make the whole process easier.

PS: We’ve also found a name, but it remains to be officially announced!

Why in-house projects?

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

A lot of companies specialized in websites creation in Indonesia usually tend to restrict their business into creating websites for others. By others, we mean other companies that need to exist on the web.

@ Idebaik, we think slightly differently. If the core of our business is obiously making websites for others, we always try to keep a space for internal projects. Internal projects can bring a lot of benefits to us :

  • They belong to us, which means any potential revenues generated by these projects will directly contribute to the company’s good health.
  • They are a good way to experiment new things in terms of website design and programming. Some of them can be considered as laboratories or experimental playground – the place we’re testing things so that next time we implement the technology, it would already be perfect.
  • They show our clients than if we do great websites for them, we are also able to give a global approach to things we do by being able to launch our own concepts. More than “people who do websites”, we are also creative ones.
  • These projects usually generate pretty good traffic and can only give better visibility to Idebaik.

Right now, we have a few in-house projects :

  • indonesiaclubbing.com, which after nearly 4 years of life has become the 1st website dedicated to nightlife and clubbing in Indonesia, with more than 11000 registered members (september 2010).
  • indonewsletter.com, which is a killer online promotion and marketing tool, to boost your sales and increase people’s awareness on your campaign by maintaining regular communication through eNewsletter. You can send up to 150,000 emails to your database in ONE SINGLE CLICK.
  • A branded online shopping – soon to be launched.

More coming soon!

Inside CSS3 – Rounded Corners made easy

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

Having developed website for almost 10 years, I have known a lot of evolutions in terms of web design. A few years back, one of the biggest frustrations was appearing when you had to make rounded corners to some elements of your website. In 2000, a time where all websites were made using the old-school <table> tag, rounded corners were done using cells. But now, with CSS3, doing rounded corners is a piece of cake. To see the evolution of HTML rounded corners, let’s compare three distinct ways of generating rounded corners.

Solution 1 – Using Table + Images

Below is an example of box using table. The corners are actually made using four 10px*10px images (bl_s1.gif, br_s1.gif, tl_s1.gif, tr_s1.gif)

<table style="background:#9c0" width="400" height="60" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0">
  <tr>
    <td height="10" width="10"><img width="10" height="10" alt="Top Left" src="/gfx/corners/tl_s1.gif" /></td>
    <td></td>
    <td height="10" width="10"><img width="10" height="10" alt="Top Right" src="/gfx/corners/tr_s1.gif" /></td>
    </tr>
  <tr>
    <td>&nbsp;</td>
    <td valign="top" >Rounded Corners using Table + Images</td>
    <td height="10" width="10">&nbsp;</td>
  </tr>
  <tr>
    <td height="10" width="10"><img width="10" height="10" alt="Bottom Left" src="/gfx/corners/bl_s1.gif" /></td>
    <td></td>
    <td height="10" width="10"><img width="10" height="10" alt="Bottom Right" src="/gfx/corners/br_s1.gif" /></td>
  </tr>
</table>

Result :

Top Left Top Right
Rounded Corners using Table + Images
Bottom Left Bottom Right

Solution 2 – Using Div + Images (relative / absolute CSS positioning)

This second solution is more recent, but still fastidious. It uses 1 <div> tag for the content (it has relative position), and 4 <img> tags for the corners (they have absolute position). This solution works well on modern browsers, but can produces unexpected results on some older ones. To accomplish that, we need to have to put the following css code in the <head> of the document :

<style type="text/css">
#box{width:380px; height:60px; padding:10px; position:relative}
#box img{position:absolute}
img#tl{left:0; top:0}
img#tr{right:0; top:0}
img#bl{left:0; bottom:0}
img#br{right:0; bottom:0}
</style>

Then display the box by putting the following code this time in the <body> of the document :

<div id="box"">
  <img id="tl" width="10" height="10" alt="Top Left" src="/gfx/corners/tl_s1.gif" />
  <img id="tr" width="10" height="10" alt="Top Right" src="/gfx/corners/tr_s1.gif" />
  <img id="bl" width="10" height="10" alt="Bottom Left" src="/gfx/corners/bl_s1.gif" />
  <img id="br" width="10" height="10" alt="Bottom Right" src="/gfx/corners/br_s1.gif" />
 Rounded Corners using Div + Images
</div>

Result :

Top LeftTop RightBottom LeftBottom RightRounded Corners using Div + Images

Solution 3 – Using CSS3 border-radius property

Extremely simple to implement and not using image, this solution will change your life – really.
To make a nice rounded corner box, put the code below in the head of your document :

<style type="text/css">
#box{
width:380px;
background:#9c0;
height:60px;
padding:10px;
border-radius:10px;
-moz-border-radius:10px;
-webkit-border-radius:10px;
background:#9c0
}
</style>

Then, in the <body> of your document :

<div id="box"">
  Rounded Corners using CSS3 border-radius property
</div>

Result :

Rounded Corners using CSS3 border-radius property

As you can see, this solution just makes everything easier. The only annoying thing is that in order to have the border radius displayed on all modern browsers, you must set the border-radius property three times, using border-radius, -moz-border-radius, and -webkit-border-radius. Old browsers will just have the box displayed withut any rounded corners.
